The fighting in the northeast Nigerian town of Maiduguri began with attacks by the Muslim militants on police and government targets, starting a week ago.

Boko Haram, an Islamist sect, wants the government to impose Islamic law, known as sharia, in the entire Muslim-dominated northern half of Nigeria. Sharia is already practiced in some northern states, but the sect wants even tougher religious laws and also opposes Western education.

A Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was reported captured Thursday by the military, but was found dead after he was turned over to police. Human rights groups are seeking more information on his death, and have also expressed concern about civilian casualties.

(CNN) -- An Iranian family learned of their 19-year-old son's death nearly a month after he was shot during a demonstration over the Islamic republic's disputed election results, an international human rights group said Sunday.

Sohrab Aarabi was apparently shot dead June 15 during one of the bloody protests that followed the June 12 presidential elections, according to the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran.

At least 20 protesters were killed in the chaos and more than 1,000 were arrested in Tehran in the first few days after the election, but it was not clear whether Aarabi's death was counted among those.

BELFAST (AFP) — Northern Ireland police fired water cannons and plastic bullets Monday to disperse youths throwing petrol bombs as the Protestant marching season got off to its most violent start in years.

At least 10 police officers were injured as violence erupted in a flashpoint area of northern Belfast and several other towns and cities, said a spokesman for the police force in the British province, the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Three of the police injuries happened in the northern town of Armagh, where a small bomb also exploded close to the route of the marchers.

MOGADISHU, July 12 (Reuters) - Somali government troops backed by African Union peacekeepers battled insurgents on Sunday in clashes that killed at least 43 people in north Mogadishu, residents and officials said.

Somalia's government and a 4,300-strong AU force (AMISOM) have been unable to take control of rebel strongholds in Mogadishu and other parts of the Horn of Africa nation despite international support and training.

"We have killed 40 fighters from al Shabaab group and we continue to repulse them. We have now pushed them back from three northern districts of Mogadishu. AU peacekeepers were assisting us," said Salad Ali Jelle, a parliamentarian who was involved in Sunday's fighting.

TOKYO, July 8 Washington Post -- South Korea's intelligence agency suspects that North Korea may have been behind an Internet attack that on Tuesday and Wednesday targeted government Web sites in South Korea and the United States, lawmakers in Seoul told Yonhap news service.

Twenty-six Internet sites in the two countries, including the office of South Korea's president and the defense ministry, were targeted, the South Korean National Intelligence Service said in a statement. In the United States, the attack targeted Web sites operated by major government agencies, including the departments of Homeland Security and Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Trade Commission, according to several computer security researchers.

"The attacks appear to have been elaborately prepared and executed at the level of a group or a state," reported Yonhap, the South Korean news service. Some members of the intelligence committee in the country's National Assembly were told by intelligence officials that North Korea or its sympathizers were prime suspects in the attacks, according to Yonhap, which cited unnamed legislators.

(Bloomberg) -- Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe described U.S. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Johnnie Carson as an “idiot” after meeting with him briefly on July 2.

In a transcript of an interview published on the Web site of the state-controlled Herald newspaper today, Mugabe said of Carson, “Who is he? I hope he was not speaking for” President Barack Obama.

“You wouldn’t speak to an idiot of that nature,” Mugabe said of the diplomat. “I was very angry with him, and he thinks he could dictate to us what to do.”

The meeting was the first between Mugabe and a U.S. official in several years, prompting speculation of a thaw in relations. It took place on the sidelines of an African Union summit in Sirte, Libya.

HAVANA (Reuters) - Communist Cuba may boast a doctor on every block and schools for all its children, but when it comes to telephones, computers and the Internet it lags behind other countries in the hemisphere, a government report showed on Thursday.

The National Statistics Office released 2008 telecommunications data showing there were 1.4 million telephones, fixed and mobile, in the country of 11.2 million inhabitants. (www.one.cu/aec2008/esp/20080618_tabla_cuadro.htm)

This gave a total density of 12.6 telephones per 100 inhabitants, the lowest in the region, according to the United Nations International Telecommunications Union.

The Pentagon recently announced that it is repositioning ground-to-air radar and missile defenses near Hawaii in case North Korea decides to launch another long-range missile, this time toward the Aloha State. So at least 1.3 million Hawaiians will benefit from defenses that many officials in the current Administration didn't even want to build.

But what about the rest of us? It's an odd time to be cutting missile defense, as the Obama Administration is doing in its 2010 budget -- by $1.2 billion to $1.6 billion, depending on how you calculate it. Programs to defend the U.S. homeland are being pared, while those that protect our soldiers or allies are being expanded after the Pentagon decided that the near-term threat is from short-range missiles. But as North Korea and Iran show, rogue regimes aren't far from having missiles that could reach the U.S.

Hugo Chávez's coalition-building efforts suffered a setback yesterday when the Honduran military sent its president packing for abusing the nation's constitution.

It seems that President Mel Zelaya miscalculated when he tried to emulate the success of his good friend Hugo in reshaping the Honduran Constitution to his liking.

But Honduras is not out of the Venezuelan woods yet. Yesterday the Central American country was being pressured to restore the authoritarian Mr. Zelaya by the likes of Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega, Hillary Clinton and, of course, Hugo himself. The Organization of American States, having ignored Mr. Zelaya's abuses, also wants him back in power. It will be a miracle if Honduran patriots can hold their ground.

Sky News... The loser of the disputed presidential elections in Iran has turned down an offer to have part of the vote recounted.

Iran's top legislative body, the Guardian Council, proposed to recount 10% of ballot boxes from the June 12 vote.

The second count would have been conducted with senior officials from both parties in attendance.

But Mirhossein Mousavi repeated his demand that the entire ballot should be annulled.

"This kind of recount will not remove ambiguities," Mr Mousavi said in a statement on his website.

"There is no other way but annulment of the vote... Some members of this committee are not impartial."

MOGADISHU, June 25 (Reuters) - Somalia's hard line al Shabaab insurgents cut a hand and a leg each off four teenagers on Thursday as punishment for robbery, the first such amputations by the rebels who follow a strict version of sharia law.

Al Shabaab is seen as a proxy for al Qaeda in Somalia and includes foreign jihadists. It has carried out executions, floggings and single-limb amputations before, mainly in the southern Somali port of Kismayu.

The insurgents are battling to oust the government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, who is a moderate Islamist, and control most of southern Somalia and parts of the Horn of Africa nation's capital.

"Their right hands and left legs have been cut off. They are due to be taken away by ambulance now for treatment," Mohamed Noh, a resident who was watching the punishment told Reuters. "They were screaming."
