BAGHDAD (AFP) – A spokesman for radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Friday blasted a court decision to jail the journalist who hurled his shoes at former US president George W. Bush and called for his immediate release.
Television reporter Muntazer al-Zaidi, 30, was sentenced to three years in jail on Thursday by the Iraq Central Criminal Court for assaulting Bush during his farewell visit to Baghdad last December.
"The sentence against Muntazer al-Zaidi reminds us of the same trials during the former regime," of executed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, said Sheikh Salah al-Obeidi, a spokesman for Sadr.
